Place based network meeting

How should Foundations show up?

Four contributors based in different places and working in different sectors (both statutory and voluntary) will talk about their experiences of being locally-based leaders working with foundations taking place-based approaches.

They will share their views on how foundations should ‘be’ in this work. What behaviours, processes and resourcing mechanisms used by foundations help or hinder progressive change in a place?

Expect this discussion to touch on:

How foundations should start work in a place
Who should be involved
How resources should flow
Power dynamics
Different forms of leadership
When it is helpful for foundations to lean in, and when to step out of the way

Our contributors will be:

Monica Needs, London Borough of Barking and Dagenham (TBC)
Monica is Head of Participation and Engagement for Barking and Dagenham Council and has had experience of working with numerous foundations and other national bodies which have initiated different kinds of place-based work in the borough.

Kelly Cunningham, York MCN Enabling Team
Kelly occupies a ‘system stewardship’ role in York where she has been responsible, with a colleague, for nurturing a large cross-sector, cross-hierarchy network of people from across the city who are working together to change the systems that perpetuate disadvantage. An extensive programme of activity has arisen from this, see - https://www.yorkmcn.org/what-are-we-doing. Kelly has worked closely with Lankelly Chase, which has funded much of this work over several years.

Convenors:

Cathy Stancer,  Director, Lankelly Chase Foundation
Cathy is a Director at Lankelly Chase Foundation, which has a mission to change systems of injustice and oppression that result in the mental distress, violence and destitution of people subject to marginalisation in the UK. Cathy is the organisational lead for Lankelly’s place-based work, which is all about supporting locally-led collaborative change processes in five places around England

Harriet Ballance, Local Implementation Lead, Lloyds Bank Foundation
